Public Art Matters
Public Art Matters
.
Hawkins Brown x Bob and Roberta Smith
This film explores public art as an essential part of architectural life. Not as an object, but as a process rooted in people, place, and participation. Through reflections from Hawkins/Brown Director David Bickle and Artist Bob and Roberta Smith, it shows how public art emerges through dialogue: between architecture and art, communities and makers.
By foregrounding community involvement, lived experience, and the gradual embedding of culture into the fabric of a building, the film demonstrates that meaningful public art is not a one-off gesture, but the result of a repeatable, human-centred process. It is this process of listening, collaboration, and shared ownership that ultimately gives public spaces their voice.
I have created many films with Hawkins Brown over the years, but this the second one in collaboration with an Artist. The first one being The Hut in collaboration with Richard Woods.
