Coffey Architects

This film is centred around communicating ideas through a mechanism designers are very accustomed to - talking over the humble sketch. Shots of the actual scheme then reinforce it.

Warbank Crescent is a big and bright social housing scheme. Situated on a once disused site, this plot of land and the wider neighbourhood surround was in desperate need of thoughtful design solutions to bring community, colour and most importantly, new and affordable homes.

When appropriate, I often encourage Architects to draw during filming. And in these films there is a simple cycle of Explaining the intention (via the Spoken Word), Demonstrating the intention (via a Sketch) and Demonstrating the realisation (via motion picture), which results in a consistent reinforcement of an idea. This cycle can then be replicated through the project timeline and scales of the design.

The Interview and Sketching was captured using 3 different camera angles. Straight on at the Interviewee, Close Up of the paper, and Overhead. This allowed for a varying change in perspective to suit what was being discussed or drawn, as well as keeping the film dynamic by adding visual interest.

This three-camera setup is something Architecture.Film utilises quite frequently, especially when we encourage designers to use models, samples or sketching to aid in delivering their message. An example of when this has been used with samples is on our Materiality film.
